The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the Maldives has entered into a partnership with the University of Auckland to study seabirds and migratory birds in the region.

The collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, on behalf of the EPA.

This partnership aims to strengthen the EPA's research capacity, particularly in studying seabird and migratory bird populations and their habitats. Key areas of focus include identifying nesting, roosting, and foraging grounds, which are critical for the survival of these species. Understanding and protecting these habitats are central to the conservation efforts outlined in the agreement.

Another vital aspect of this initiative is addressing the impact of invasive species on bird nesting and roosting islands. These species pose a significant threat to local ecosystems, and the partnership will work towards implementing control measures to mitigate these risks.

The collaboration marks a crucial step forward in environmental conservation and biodiversity protection in the Maldives.

The MoU will enable EPA to leverage the expertise of the University of Auckland to develop sustainable strategies that protect vital ecosystems, ensuring the long-term preservation of the Maldives' diverse natural heritage.
