The State Trading Organisation (STO) has announced efforts to address the recent rise in commodity prices, triggered by supply shortages as adverse weather continues to disrupt the flow of goods across the Maldives.

STO stated that essential items such as limes, onions, and chillies have become scarce due to delays in shipments from both domestic and international sources. Rough seas have prevented boats from reaching the capital and outlying islands, while some consignments remain at the port awaiting clearance.

To ease the shortage, STO is working to import additional stocks and expedite the distribution of high-demand goods. The company reiterated its role in stabilising the market and ensuring that basic commodities remain accessible and affordable to the public.

Logistical delays have further impacted cargo unloading and distribution at ports. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) stated that recent weather conditions hampered cargo handling, though efforts are ongoing. MPL teams have successfully offloaded around 5,000 sacks of goods, with operations continuing as the weather improves.

Speaking to MMTV, traders in Malé reported delays in stock arrivals and difficulties transporting goods from the port to retail outlets. However, with improving conditions and coordinated efforts from STO and MPL, the situation is expected to stabilise in the coming days.
