The Maldives has Celebrated its 61st Independence Day in Sri Lanka with a reception in Colombo that brought together attendees from both countries.

Hosted by the Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka, the event drew 528 guests, including Sri Lankan ministers, provincial governors, deputy ministers, senior military officers, government officials, diplomats accredited to Sri Lanka and members of the business community.

Sri Lanka's Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, attended as the chief guest and conveyed Independence Day greetings to the Government and people of the Maldives. He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries, noting that the Maldives' Independence Agreement was signed in Sri Lanka.

Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Masood Imad said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's State visit to Sri Lanka in May signified an important step in further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. He also acknowledged the support provided by Maldivian and Sri Lankan companies in organising the reception.

The celebration also showcased Maldivian culture through a series of traditional performances, including Boduberu, Maafathi, and Dhandi Jehun. The performances were presented by members of the Maldivian community and Maldivian students living in Sri Lanka.
