Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing health reasons, bringing an early end to his term as the country's head of state.

In a statement released through his press secretary, Shahabuddin said recent medical examinations diagnosed him with autonomic neuropathy, a condition that causes occasional loss of consciousness, making him unable to fulfil the responsibilities of the presidency.

The 76-year-old assumed office in April 2023 and remained president through the political upheaval that followed the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the student-led uprising in 2024. Although the presidency in Bangladesh is largely ceremonial, the office serves as the country's constitutional head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, while executive authority rests with the prime minister and cabinet.

Under Bangladesh's Constitution, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will perform the duties of acting president until a new president is elected.
