The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has stated that agreements for 3,880 of the 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya Scheme have now been handed over to Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) for processing.

The 4,000 flats, financed through India’s EXIM Bank, were largely completed over the past two years after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office. FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel previously told MMTV that the units are being equipped with power grid connections, security systems, a GPO network for internet and media services, and a waste disposal system that had not been assigned earlier. He said the current Administration awarded the remaining works to various companies. FDC has also started handing over keys to eligible recipients.

The Government earlier attempted to review the beneficiary list after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) identified issues in the list compiled by the previous administration. However, President Dr Muizzu decided that all listed applicants, except those found to have violated the eligibility rules, would receive their units.

In line with this decision, recipients are being notified of their appointment dates to sign the housing agreements through the FDC portal, once the Housing Ministry verifies that they meet the eligibility requirements. The Ministry has so far forwarded information for 3,880 recipients to FDC, which is now working to finalise agreement signing.

As part of the Government’s efforts to make housing more affordable, a rent subsidy scheme has also been introduced for tenants who make timely payments. Under the scheme, the monthly rent for three-bedroom apartments has been set at MVR 9,000 and at MVR 7,000 for two-bedroom units. These rates were previously MVR 13,000 and MVR 9,000 respectively.
