The People’s Majlis has voted to extend its third session of the year until next week, allowing additional time to complete pending legislative work.
The motion to extend the term was passed with the support of 55 parliamentarians, while seven MPs voted against the proposal. The decision was tabled by the People’s Majlis Secretariat to ensure the completion of key matters awaiting parliamentary action during the current session.
Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that the extension was necessary as several important items of business remained unfinished. He noted that the move falls in line with parliamentary regulations, which allow the term of a session to be prolonged through a vote if required.
Under parliamentary regulations, the People’s Majlis convenes in three sessions each year: from 1 February to 15 May, from 1 June to 15 August, and from 1 October to 30 November. The rules allow MPs to vote for an extension if important work remains unfinished within the designated period.
The third session was originally scheduled to conclude at the end of this month, but the presiding officer confirmed that the deadline has now been extended to 4 December.
