Bank of Maldives (BML) has donated USD 25,000 to the nationwide telethon organised to assist Sri Lanka, which is facing severe flooding and torrential rains in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

The contribution was handed over to the telethon by BML’s CEO and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, and was received by PSM Deputy Managing Director Yameen Rasheed.

Speaking after presenting the donation, CEO Shareef noted the long-standing trade and financial ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, highlighting that a significant number of Sri Lankans hold accounts with BML. He added that the bank also maintains business partnerships in Sri Lanka, making it important for BML to contribute to relief efforts during this difficult period.

The telethon, initiated by Public Service Media (PSM) in collaboration with 37 local media outlets, is open to contributions from Maldivian citizens, NGOs, clubs, companies and institutions. The fundraiser will continue until 1:00 a.m. tonight, with donations accepted via cash, bank transfers, cheques and QR code payments.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives share a long history of close people-to-people relations. Sri Lanka is home to one of the largest Maldivian communities abroad, and officials have noted that support during crises reflects the deep ties between the two nations.
