State media outlet PSM has announced that more than 240 million Sri Lankan Rupees have been raised through the “Ceylon Aa Eku Dhiveheen” telethon, held in partnership with several Maldivian media organisations, to support Sri Lanka’s recovery from Cyclone Ditwah.
The telethon came to a close with over MVR 11 million and USD 43,681.31 in the Bank of Maldives account dedicated for Sri Lanka relief efforts.
In addition to bank deposits, members of the public contributed by placing donations in collection boxes positioned across Malé. Authorities are currently counting these funds, with the total expected to increase once the process is completed.
A significant share of the contributions came from State security services. The Maldives Police Service donated over MVR 2.4 million, while the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) contributed MVR 1 million.
Government bodies, State-Owned Enterprises, private companies and individual donors also took part in the nationwide effort. Organisers noted that this has been the most successful telethon conducted in such a short period, reflecting broad public solidarity with Sri Lanka during its time of need.
