President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has responded to public criticism regarding detainees in pre-trial detention, emphasising that releasing all individuals from custody immediately is not feasible.

Speaking at a meeting with residents of Maafannu, he highlighted efforts made by the Government to improve the Criminal Court’s facilities, allowing cases to be scheduled properly and ensuring detainees are informed of their hearing dates.

The President explained that the detainees in pre-trial detention include a range of serious cases:

• Murder charges: 29 suspects

• Terrorism charges: 20 suspects

• Child sexual abuse charges: 117 suspects

• Assault and violence charges: 70 suspects

• Drug trafficking charges: 116 suspects

He questioned whether the public would support releasing such individuals instantly.

President Dr Muizzu assured that the Government will not interfere with the judiciary and is committed to allowing courts to function independently. He added that sufficient resources and budgets have been provided to the judiciary, and no one accused of child sexual abuse will be released based on political considerations.
