The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced the introduction of a temporary solution to the persistent parking issues in Greater Malé Region, with 1,964 new parking spaces identified across Hulhumalé.

The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), is aimed at easing traffic congestion in the region.

According to the Ministry, the designated four-wheeler parking zones are to improve traffic flow in Hulhumalé, where vehicles parked along main roads have contributed significantly to delays and congestion. Officials noted that the newly allocated spaces provide immediate relief while long-term plans for dedicated parking buildings continue to advance.

The temporary parking areas and available capacity are as follows:

  • Masjid Al-Waalidhain area: 115 spaces
  • Ghaazee School area: 254 spaces
  • Hiyaa Tower 16 area: 1,233 spaces
  • Vinares flats zone: 362 spaces

The Ministry stated that establishing such extensive temporary parking facilities is an important step towards alleviating pressure on roads in both Hulhumalé and Malé City. HDC is currently working on the development of parking buildings to offer a permanent, sustainable solution to the region’s parking shortage.

Officials said the temporary arrangement will reduce road obstruction, improve safety for pedestrians and motorists, and make daily travel smoother for residents. The ministry added that the newly opened spaces will serve as a significant relief for vehicle owners while permanent infrastructure is being finalised.
