Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has announced that construction of 55 council office buildings being developed under contractor-finance arrangements will be completed by the end of June 2026.

The Minister made the statement in a post on X, noting that the nationwide council-building programme is progressing rapidly. He said the completed buildings will be handed over to the respective local councils once construction is finalised.

According to the Ministry, the project is part of the national initiative launched during the Administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to strengthen local governance infrastructure across the Maldives. Under the programme, 105 islands are set to receive new council buildings.

Of these, 55 buildings are being constructed by the Road Development Corporation (RDC) under contractor finance, while an additional 50 buildings will be developed with grant assistance from the Chinese government.

The Ministry stated that the upgraded facilities will support more efficient public service delivery at the island level and provide dedicated administrative spaces for elected local councils.
