Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency, has been elected as the interim Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Ghafoor secured 65 votes out of the 66 MDP National Council members who participated in the vote during tonight’s council session.

The Council had originally convened on 30 November to select an interim chairperson, but the meeting was adjourned due to heated exchanges.

During the earlier meeting, two names had been proposed and endorsed for the post: Ghafoor and former Dhidhdhoo MP Abdullah Waheed. However, Waheed later withdrew his candidacy, leaving Ghafoor as the sole nominee for the vote.

The election was held to temporarily fill the position left vacant after former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail resigned abruptly, ending his four-year tenure.

Outgoing Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail also pledged his full cooperation and support to Ghafoor during this interim period.
