Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has met U.S. Ambassador to the Maldives Hugo Yonduring the ambassador’s farewell courtesy call, noting significant progress in bilateral economic cooperation during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration.
According to the Minister, the meeting reviewed the continued deepening of Maldives–U.S. relations, with particular emphasis on trade, investment and private-sector engagement. Minister Saeed thanked Ambassador Yon for his role in advancing economic collaboration and supporting structural reforms in the Maldives.
The Minister highlighted several milestones achieved in 2024, including the introduction of major U.S. brands to the Maldivian market. This includes Google’s newly announced investment in the Maldives and the rollout of PayPal services, both of which he described as key developments aligned with the government’s digital-economy goals.
Minister Saeed also noted progress under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), through which the Maldives and the United States have been working to expand market access, strengthen governance standards and facilitate private-sector participation. He added that the government welcomed U.S. support for establishing the American Chamber of Commerce in the Maldives, which aims to enhance commercial linkages and promote further investment.
Ambassador Yon concludes his term as U.S. envoy following a period marked by increased engagement on economic, security and governance cooperation between the two nations.
