Judge Uz Mohamed Niyaz, the longest-serving member of the High Court, has retired after more than two decades of continuous service in the Maldivian judiciary.
The High Court confirmed that Tuesday was his final working day. Judge Uz Niyaz concluded his tenure after attending multiple hearings on Monday and delivering rulings in two pending cases.
He has also stepped down from his post as Vice-President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), a position he relinquished citing health reasons.
Judge Uz Niyaz’s judicial career spans 23 years, beginning as Magistrate of Haa Dhaalu Vaikaradhoo Court. He later served as Senior Magistrate for the South Thiladhunmathi region before being appointed to the High Court in January 2018. Over the years, he became the court’s longest-serving judge.
He holds a degree in Sharia and Law from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
