Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that efforts are underway to complete the land reclamation project for Hulhumalé Phase III within the next one and a half months, as the Government intensifies work to address housing needs in the Greater Malé Region.

Land reclamation under the third phase of the Hulhumalé development began in October 2023, although progress was interrupted by several temporary halts. Work resumed on 10 November 2025, with renewed momentum following the deployment of additional heavy machinery.

To accelerate the project, the Government has brought in two large dredgers, each capable of handling up to 22,000 cubic metres of sand at a time. Among them is a trailing suction hopper dredger operated by Boskalis, which commenced reclamation activities on 28 November.

According to MACL, a total of 31 hectares of land had been reclaimed by Saturday, representing approximately 49.2 per cent of the 63 hectares planned for Hulhumalé Phase III. The company stated that the target is to complete the remaining work within the next six weeks.

Once the reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase III is completed, the Government plans to begin allocating land plots in the newly reclaimed area.

Following the completion of Phase III, the large dredgers currently in use will be deployed for land reclamation works in Gulhifalhu. The Government continues to undertake multiple reclamation projects across the Malé region as part of its strategy to address long-standing housing challenges.

At present, land reclamation is underway in both Rasmalé and Hulhumalé Phase III, while additional projects are scheduled for Giraavaru Falhu, Uthuru Thila Falhu and Gulhifalhu in the near future.
