Maldives Food and Drug Authority --

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a public advisory urging caution over the possible presence of harmful chemicals in three medicines manufactured in Thailand.

According to the MFDA, it was informed by the Southeast Asia Region Network that tests conducted by Thailand’s Drug Regulatory Authority revealed excessive levels of dangerous chemicals in certain batches of the medicines. The affected products include metformin hydrochloride 750 mg, commonly used by diabetic patients, Ranitidine 150 mg, and vitamin A (retinol) 60 mg.

The MFDA clarified that these medicines were not imported into the Maldives through any official Government or authorised import policies. Nevertheless, the authority has advised Maldivians to remain vigilant, particularly when purchasing medicines from Thailand through unofficial or personal channels.

The authority stressed the importance of ensuring that all medicines are obtained from licensed pharmacies and approved suppliers, warning that the use of medicines containing unsafe levels of chemicals could pose serious health risks.

The MFDA stated that it will continue to monitor regional alerts and share relevant information with the public to safeguard public health.
