Hulhumalé Phase 3 reclamation --

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has dismissed claims that land reclamation projects are being carried out using unmanaged waste, stating that the allegations are false and misleading.

HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair said the land is being reclaimed using construction and demolition (C&D) material, which is handled under proper waste management procedures. He said all materials classified as waste are carefully collected and segregated in accordance with required standards. Zuhair also urged the public not to spread false rumours, stressing that the dissemination of inaccurate information on matters of public interest is unacceptable.

The issue was raised during a meeting with residents of Hulhumalé Phase 1, where concerns were voiced that the Hulhumalé Phase 3 project would involve reclamation using garbage. Both the President and HDC denied the claims. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said there was no justification for such practices and made clear that they would not be permitted.

HDC said the President is closely monitoring the progress of the land reclamation project and that the corporation is providing full and transparent information on the work being carried out. The company added that efforts are being made to keep residents informed as the project advances.

The Hulhumalé Phase 3 project involves land leased from the lagoon under the previous administration. President Dr Muizzu said he was not aware of the situation at the time, but since assuming office, the land reclamation process has been expedited. The lottery for plots to be leased under Phase 3 has also been completed.
