President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government is working to enact a special law to address the growing number of cyber crimes in the Maldives.

The announcement was made during a “Coffee with the President” session held at the National Youth Conference organised by the Ministry of Youth, Information and Arts, where several young participants raised concerns about online scams, cyber fraud and harassment. The President listened to the concerns and outlined the steps the government plans to take to strengthen cyber security.

The President said the Government is committed to taking all necessary measures to curb the spread of online scams and harassment. He noted that the existing legal framework does not provide sufficient authority for law enforcement agencies to effectively prevent and respond to cyber crimes.

He explained that the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), which was established last year, requires a strong legal foundation to function effectively. As part of the planned reforms, the Government intends to introduce cyber crime legislation next year and establish a Cyber Incident Response Team to enhance national readiness and response capabilities.

The NCSA serves as the national focal point for cyber security efforts and is responsible for developing and enforcing cyber security policies across the Maldives.
