The Maldives Police Service has launched a special operation to enhance public safety during the year-end holiday period.

The operation, named Riveli, is conducted annually during the festive season and focuses on vehicle checks, the prevention of drug and alcohol offences, and the protection of public property. Police said the operation began at 3:00 pm on Wednesday and will continue until 2 January.

Speaking at a press conference, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Shareef said a large number of officers will be deployed across Malé City as part of the operation. He noted that police statistics show a rise in criminal activity during the holiday season each year, prompting increased enforcement measures.

In addition to Malé City, police will also carry out activities on nearby islands and resorts this year. Vehicle checkpoints will be established across the capital, with particular attention given to preventing theft and other crimes. Efforts to curb alcohol and drug abuse will be prioritised.

The police service also said action will be taken against individuals who violate social distancing guidelines, as well as drivers who operate vehicles in a manner that poses a risk or causes inconvenience to the public.
