The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has shut down 66 illegitimate businesses so far as part of intensified efforts to curb illegal foreign business operations in the Maldives.
A special task force was formed last month to inspect and take action against businesses operating unlawfully. Speaking to State media, State Minister for Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Thariq Ahmed said 307 complaints have been received to date under the enforcement drive.
The State Minister stated that inspections have been carried out at 153 establishments, resulting in the closure of 66 businesses. Of these, 46 were shut down for violations of laws administered by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, while 20 were closed for breaching other applicable laws. He added that 22 businesses were allowed to reopen after completing the required legal procedures.
“Businesses are permitted to resume operations after fulfilling the requirements of the Business Registration Act and its regulations, complying with standards set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), and settling any fines imposed,” the State Minister said.
The Government has stepped up measures to address illegitimate business activity, including strengthening enforcement mechanisms and amending the Foreign Investment Act to reserve more sectors for Maldivians. In addition, certain occupations are being designated exclusively for Maldivians, with work permits for expatriates in those roles to be phased out.
