The Maldives Zakat House and Avas Enterprises have signed a memorandum of understanding to enable the online payment of Zakat al-Fitr.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs on Thursday. Zakat House Fund Manager Abdulla Ali signed on behalf of Maldives Zakat House, while Managing Director Mohamed Yaniu Rameez signed on behalf of Avas Enterprises.

The partnership expands digital payment options for Zakat payers across the country. Under the agreement, the collection of Fitr Zakat through Avas Enterprises’ online platforms will officially commence during Ramadan this year.

According to the memorandum, no additional fees will be charged to the public when paying Zakat through Avas Enterprises’ platforms. Avas Enterprises will also waive transfer fees when remitting collected funds to Maldives Zakat House. This arrangement is intended to ensure that the full amount paid by Zakat contributors is distributed to eligible beneficiaries.

The initiative forms part of Maldives Zakat House’s efforts to digitalise Zakat services and improve public access. By utilising secure and reliable digital platforms, the institution aims to make Zakat payments more convenient, transparent, and efficient.

The agreement follows recent reforms to the national Zakat system, including the enactment of the new Zakat Act, which came into effect on 1 January 2026 and strengthened the legal framework governing Zakat administration in the Maldives.
