The Government has announced that its national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, will cover the cost of prescription glasses obtained from private opticals and clinics, starting 15 January 2026.

This decision comes in response to growing public concerns over the high cost of eye care services at private providers. To further ease accessibility, the Government previously opened new optical centres at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on 27 July 2025 and in Hulhumalé.

Citizens have repeatedly raised the issue of limited coverage under Aasandha, particularly during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s engagements with residents of Malé City. In line with these concerns, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has confirmed that efforts are underway to broaden the range of healthcare services covered under the scheme.

This expansion is a significant step toward ensuring affordable and inclusive healthcare, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to meeting the needs of the public.
