Member of Parliament for the Fuvahmulah South constituency Ibrahim Hussain has said that the Government of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is steering the country towards sustainable development and long-term economic stability.
Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, MP Hussain said the situation inherited by the current Government was marked by significant challenges, including heavy debt and financial strain. He said the Administration assumed office at a time when the country was facing severe fiscal pressures.
Referring to that period, the MP said a country that was close to “bankruptcy” has since seen positive changes and renewed hope. He said the current Administration has focused on sustainable development and social improvement, adding that tangible progress is now visible across several sectors.
MP Hussain said that towards the end of the previous administration, fishermen had not been paid on time, small and medium enterprises had suffered, and neglect was evident across multiple sectors. He said those conditions have since changed, noting that loan repayments are now being made regularly, the Maldives’ international credit standing is improving, and the financial system is stabilising. He added that these developments demonstrate that the Maldives is not bankrupt.
He attributed these improvements to what he described as prudent decision-making by President Dr Muizzu, stating that the country’s overall situation has improved as a result.
The MP further said that the current Government has delivered more development work in its first two years than any previous administration. He highlighted major infrastructure projects, including progress on the Thilamalé Bridge, the opening of the new terminal at Velana International Airport, and the completion and official opening of the terminal at Hanimaadhoo International Airport.
MP Hussain also said that many initiatives outlined in the Government’s manifesto have already begun, adding that materials required for island-level development projects are now being supplied without delay.
He expressed confidence that, with the ongoing efforts of the Government, 2026 will be a year in which key pledges made in the President’s manifesto are fulfilled.
