Minister Thoriq holds climate and renewable energy talks at IRENA Assembly

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has held discussions on strengthening climate resilience and cooperation on the sidelines of the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Minister Thoriq met with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of Climate Change and Environment Dr Amna Al Dahak. The meeting focused on further strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and the UAE in the areas of environment and energy.

The two ministers exchanged views on accelerating clean energy production and enhancing resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change. Discussions also covered cooperation on environmental issues at the international level and ways to strengthen the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.

Minister Thoriq also met with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, to review and identify potential areas of collaboration. The meeting highlighted shared priorities between the Maldives and IRENA in protecting the environment and promoting renewable energy, with discussions held on possible joint programmes.

The 16th IRENA Assembly was held from 11 to 12 January 2026 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, under the theme “Powering Humanity: Renewable Energy for Shared Prosperity”.
