Minister of State for Social and Family Development Aishath Zuhurubaan has said that the work carried out over the past two years has focused on ensuring that no one is left behind in society.
Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, Zuhurubaan said the mandate of the Ministry of Social and Family Development extends across all segments of society, including women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families.
“The work of the past two years has ensured that no one is excluded from society. We have worked very carefully during this period,” she said.
Zuhurubaan said significant efforts have been made to empower persons with disabilities, noting that a range of opportunities have been created to improve their quality of life. She said ministry teams have worked across the country to provide employment opportunities, adding that more than 350 persons with disabilities have been employed so far.
Highlighting the importance of senior citizens, the state minister said greater attention must be given to ensuring they remain active members of society. She noted that Israhvehinge Naadhee centres established in Malé and Hulhumalé have received strong public response, with many senior citizens participating in daily activities and programmes. She added that work is also underway to establish Israhvehinge Naadhee facilities in the atolls.
Zuhurubaan said these initiatives align with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy of building a compassionate society, under which the Government has prioritised programmes for senior citizens.
She also stressed the need for continued focus on women, noting that women are often more vulnerable during periods of change. She said various initiatives have been implemented in recent years to empower women, highlighting the Fashaa Madhadhu loan scheme aimed at supporting women-led businesses, which she said has received a positive response.
The state minister further said the Government has taken steps to strengthen family welfare and safety, including increasing the allowance for single mothers and fathers to MVR 3,000, marking the first increase in 15 years.
Zuhurubaan said the Ministry continues to work closely with communities under the guidance of Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham. She added that effective progress has been made in implementing the President’s social policy agenda and that further initiatives are planned in the coming period.
