Minister holds talks with Sheraton, Anantara officials on industry development

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has held meetings with senior representatives of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa and Anantara Resorts to discuss efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ tourism industry, with a focus on sustainability, destination marketing and workforce development.
The discussions took place as part of the Ministry’s ongoing engagement with industry stakeholders to reinforce the Maldives’ position as a high-value tourism destination while addressing long-term environmental and economic challenges.
During a meeting with Greg Allen, General Manager of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa, the Minister discussed destination marketing strategies and key source markets for tourist arrivals to the Maldives. The talks also covered opportunities for product innovation within the tourism sector, strengthening links between resorts and local communities, and developing the skills of tourism professionals. Climate-resilient tourism solutions were also highlighted as a priority area.
In a separate meeting, Minister Thoriq met with senior officials of Anantara Resorts, including Complex General Manager Jason Cruz and Complex Resort Manager Ahmed Imthiyaz of Anantara Dhigu, Veli & Naladhoo Maldives. The discussions focused on reinforcing the Maldives’ international standing as an environmentally sustainable, high-end luxury destination, while promoting tourism growth alongside environmental protection.
According to the Ministry, both meetings emphasised the importance of closer collaboration between the tourism industry and civil society, as well as creating employment and skills development opportunities for Maldivians working in the sector. Climate adaptation and resilience were also key themes raised during the discussions.
The Ministry stated that the engagements align with the Government’s policy direction to develop an economically beneficial and environmentally sustainable tourism industry, while preserving the natural environment that underpins the Maldives’ tourism sector.
