Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that while seaplane services are costly in the Maldivian context, they remain a crucial investment for the development of atolls and the promotion of local tourism.
The Minister made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration ceremony marking the commencement of seaplane operations to Noonu Velidhoo. He noted that although the cost of operating seaplane services is high relative to population size, strengthening transportation networks is essential to support infrastructure development and expand local tourism.
Minister Ameen emphasised the importance of developing air transport alongside sea transport, stating that reliable and efficient connectivity is vital for economic growth in the atolls.
He also highlighted that the launch of seaplane services to Velidhoo fulfils a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to the island. Describing the occasion as a significant milestone, the Minister said the commencement of operations marks a positive development for residents of both Velidhoo and neighbouring Fodhdhoo, and would provide a boost to local tourism and infrastructure development in the area.
The Minister further noted that Island Aviation is currently providing a range of air services across the country. Under the President’s initiative, seaplane services are already operating in two regions, with flights to Alifu Alifu Thoddoo scheduled to begin next month.
In addition, Minister Ameen said efforts are underway this month to interconnect the southern atolls of Addu, Fuvahmulah and Huvadhu, with Seenu Gan serving as the main aviation hub. He added that the initiative is expected to significantly strengthen connectivity and boost local tourism in the southern region.
