West Maafannu MP Mohamed Musthafa Ibrahim has stated that there has been a lack of cooperation from Malé City Mayor Adam Azim in addressing issues affecting the capital.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, Musthafa said concerns raised by residents of the Maafannu West constituency had been repeatedly brought to the Mayor’s attention, but little cooperation was shown in resolving them. He said this lack of coordination had contributed to delays and shortcomings in addressing city-level issues.

Musthafa also stated that residents of the constituency have no reason to move away from supporting the Government of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, adding that People’s National Congress (PNC) plans to begin door-to-door outreach activities in the constituency from 27 January.

Citing specific examples, the MP pointed to the Mayor’s alleged lack of cooperation during the Golden Football Challenge. He said the Maafannu football team had requested access to a football ground for training ahead of the tournament, but the request was not facilitated by the city council.

Musthafa also raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of Rasfannu during the Mayor’s tenure. He noted that Rasfannu had been developed and maintained during President Dr Muizzu’s time as Housing Minister and later as Mayor of Malé City, but said its condition has since declined.

“Over the past two years, those who swim there can see the damage. The area has deteriorated significantly, and the water has become polluted and unsuitable for swimming,” he said.

The MP said he had discussed the issue with Mayor Azim, but no solution was reached, prompting the matter to be brought to the attention of the Government. He added that the Government has carried out renovation works in recent years and will continue efforts to restore and maintain Rasfannu.

Musthafa said the Government remains committed to serving the public and ensuring development projects are sustained. He stressed that the city council plays a crucial role in maintaining development initiatives, but said this can only be achieved through cooperation between the council and the Government.
