Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has reported that 80 per cent of land reclamation works for the development of Thaa Vilufushi Airport have been completed, highlighting a key milestone in the project’s progress.

According to MACL, 65 hectares have been reclaimed out of the 81 hectares allocated for the airport development. The land reclamation works are progressing as planned and remain on schedule.

The airport project, which was awarded to MACL, includes the construction of a 1,800-metre runway, a terminal building, fire and rescue facilities, and other essential airport infrastructure. Once completed, the airport will be operated by MACL.

MACL said the land reclamation works are being carried out using the dredger Filippo Brunelleschi, which has a dredging capacity of 11,300 cubic metres.

The Vilufushi Airport development is scheduled to be completed within two years and six months, with land reclamation forming a critical early phase of construction. The project is expected to enhance regional accessibility and support socio-economic development in Thaa Atoll.
