Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said housing is being treated as a fundamental social priority by the current Administration, rather than a political issue, stressing that efforts are focused on ensuring citizens have access to secure living conditions.

He made the remarks while speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for 1,190 housing units in Hulhumalé Phase II under the BML Affordable Housing Project, noting that the Government is working to establish permanent housing as a basic form of security for all Maldivians.

The minister said initiatives are underway to expand access to housing, including enabling first-time buyers to obtain homes through more affordable financing options, while also progressing with social housing programmes targeted at low-income households, adding that families currently facing housing constraints in Malé will not be left behind.

He further noted that administrative work is ongoing to support individuals in need of housing assistance, including those in vulnerable situations, emphasising that a compassionate approach is required to ensure that the most disadvantaged groups are supported.

The minister added that different segments of society require tailored solutions, reaffirming the Government’s position that access to housing should be recognised as a right for every citizen.
