Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has said the Government remains on track to meet its renewable energy targets by 2028, with significant progress recorded over the past two years.
Speaking on State media, the minister said the Maldives has added 110 megawatts of renewable energy capacity since 2023. With projects currently under implementation, total renewable energy capacity is expected to increase to 220 megawatts.
The Government aims to generate 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources. To achieve this target, multiple renewable energy projects are being implemented across different regions of the country in phased stages.
The minister noted that when the renewable energy initiative began in 2023, installed renewable capacity stood at 53 megawatts. Over the past two years, this figure has more than doubled with the addition of 110 megawatts.
Highlighting the economic impact of the transition, he said the Maldives spends MVR 443.6 million annually on fuel imports, with a large share used for electricity generation. Reducing reliance on fuel-based power generation remains a key objective of the Government’s renewable energy strategy, he added.
Renewable energy projects are also underway in special economic zones, including a 100-megawatt floating solar project currently under development. In addition, solar panel installations and battery storage systems are being established on islands across several atolls, while solar projects are also being implemented in the Malé area.
The minister further said that a two-megawatt renewable energy system is being installed at Kulhudhuffushi Airport, with similar solar installations planned at several other airports across the country.
