Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed has said the relocation of domestic flight operations to Terminal 2 marks a new phase in improving passenger services at Velana International Airport.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, MD Shareef said the move was driven by the steady increase in domestic passenger numbers alongside rising international arrivals, which had placed pressure on the former domestic terminal, particularly during peak travel seasons.
He said overcrowding and service delays had become persistent issues at the previous facility, with passengers often experiencing long waiting times during busy periods. The decision to shift domestic operations to a larger terminal was taken to address these constraints and improve service efficiency.
MD Shareef said the upgrade of Terminal 2 is intended to go beyond a simple relocation, with expanded facilities aimed at improving passenger flow and service quality. He said check-in capacity has been increased from eight to 27 counters, with additional security screening machines and departure gates introduced to reduce congestion.
The upgraded terminal also includes separate prayer rooms for men and women, a children’s play area and food and beverage outlets, while baggage handling services have been expanded with the installation of two new baggage belts that are significantly larger than those at the former domestic terminal.
MACL said the improvements are expected to provide relief to passengers, particularly during peak seasons, and support the continued growth of domestic travel as air connectivity across the Maldives expands.
