President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on voters to support People’s National Congress (PNC) candidates in the upcoming Local Council and WDC elections, stating that stronger institutional alignment would enable the Government to deliver on its development pledges more effectively.
The President made the appeal while speaking at the Dhiveheenge Raajje Taraweeh event held at Artificial Beach on last evening. He said that from the outset of his presidency, he had prioritised sincerity and equitable development, and emphasised the importance of cooperation between central authorities and local councils.
Referring to his tenure as Mayor of Malé City, the President said he had initiated a Strategic Action Plan aimed at structured urban development. However, he stated that progress on the plan had slowed in recent years, adding that several intended initiatives had not advanced as expected.
The President said councils should function as partners in implementing national policies rather than acting as obstacles. He urged residents of Malé to elect a mayor and council members who would work closely with the Government, including representatives to Women’s Development Committees.
Extending the appeal to other cities and islands, the President said coordinated governance would facilitate smoother implementation of policy commitments. He added that despite challenges, the Administration had made progress over the past two years and remained committed to fulfilling its remaining pledges.
Encouraging voters to support PNC candidates, the President said electing councils aligned with the Government would make it easier to carry forward development initiatives and ensure continuity in governance.
