People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah has confirmed that PNC will campaign in favour of the proposed referendum on holding presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently.
Speaking at a press conference on 1 March, Falah said the party believes holding the two elections on the same day would serve the broader national interest. He appealed to the public to support the amendment when the matter is put to vote.
Falah clarified that the proposal does not involve extending the presidential term. Instead, he explained that synchronising the elections would require a six-month reduction in the current term of the People’s Majlis in order to align the electoral cycles.
He said the benefits of conducting both elections on the same day are substantial, arguing that it would streamline the democratic process and provide greater stability in governance. Falah also noted that local council elections are held mid-term, stating that discussions about reducing the frequency of elections should consider the overall electoral framework.
Responding to criticism from opposition parties, Falah said the issue should be approached as a national matter rather than a political contest. He reiterated that PNC’s stance in the referendum is firmly in support of holding the two elections simultaneously, which he said would ultimately benefit both the country and its people.
