The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has urged resorts and tourism service providers to verify airline schedule changes before transporting tourists to the airport, following widespread flight disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a press release, the Ministry said the closure of airspace in several Middle Eastern countries has led to multiple flight cancellations, disrupting travel plans to and from the Maldives. Authorities are coordinating closely with relevant agencies to assess the challenges faced by affected travellers and to ensure necessary assistance is provided.

The Ministry advised resorts and tourism operators to carefully confirm updated airline schedules prior to arranging airport transfers for departing guests. Travellers impacted by cancellations have also been urged to follow guidance and updates issued by their respective airlines and relevant authorities.

According to available information, eight flights were cancelled yesterday alone, leaving more than 1,400 tourists stranded at Velana International Airport. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has put in place arrangements to assist affected passengers. Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim also visited the airport to assess the situation and inquire about the welfare of stranded travellers last night.
