A new motorcycle parking zone with capacity for 224 vehicles has been opened near Velaanaage, as part of ongoing efforts to address congestion in the capital.
The facility, developed on the site of the former Huravee Building, was constructed under a project awarded by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to the Road Development Corporation (RDC). The zone is designated exclusively for motorcycle parking.
The area houses several Government offices and receives high daily public traffic. The newly opened zone expands capacity in one of the capital’s busiest administrative districts.
The development forms part of Government plans to improve parking infrastructure across the Greater Malé Region. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced a programme to construct multi-storey parking buildings capable of accommodating up to 7,500 vehicles.
Under the initiative, 15 parking buildings are planned across the region. An agreement has been signed with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), with construction expected to commence within the next four months.
Authorities have also outlined plans to establish additional parking facilities in Malé and Villimalé, including a proposed parking zone along Chandhanee Magu at the site of the former Arabiyya School, as part of longer-term urban traffic management measures.
