Construction has officially commenced on a connection bridge linking Maafushi with the island’s newly reclaimed land.
The project was launched at a ceremony held on Sunday, attended by Maafushi constituency Member of Parliament Hussain Riza Adam, State Minister for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ismail Hameed, and Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Mohamed Jamsheed.
The project involves the construction of a 137-metre bridge to connect the existing island with the reclaimed area. MTCC has been awarded the contract at a cost of MVR 35.42 million, with the project scheduled for completion within 365 days.
A total of 25 hectares of land was reclaimed from the Maafushi lagoon in 2021, forming a separate landmass. The new bridge will provide a permanent link between the two areas, enabling smoother access and supporting planned development.
Maafushi, one of the country’s leading local tourism hubs with a high concentration of guesthouse operations, is expected to benefit significantly from the improved connectivity. The bridge is set to facilitate the movement of people and goods, enhancing travel convenience and supporting further economic growth on the island.
