President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured the public that there is no difficulty in securing fuel and food supplies for the Maldives as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, the President announced the formation of a Special Cabinet Committee tasked with assessing the impact of the unrest and taking immediate action. He explained that the committee is examining all relevant areas, including the situation of Maldivians residing in the region and students studying abroad, as well as the potential consequences for the Maldivian economy.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that the Government is working to mitigate economic risks, particularly in relation to the tourism industry, which remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economy. The President assured that work is underway to ensure that the tourism sector is resilient.
Addressing travel disruptions, the President noted that flights transiting through the Middle East are being rerouted to arrive in the Maldives through alternative channels. He added that discussions have been held with airlines and travel agents, resulting in new arrangements that allow flights to operate accordingly.
Furthermore, the President stated that alternative flight options are being arranged for tourists scheduled to depart from the Maldives to Middle Eastern destinations, ensuring minimal disruption to travel plans.
The President reaffirmed that the Government remains vigilant and proactive in safeguarding both the nation’s economic interests and the well-being of Maldivians abroad during this volatile period.
