President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the decision to waive fines and provide financial assistance to owners of Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa flats was not politically motivated, but rather the fulfilment of a presidential pledge.
Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, President Dr Muizzu responded to questions on whether the move was linked to the upcoming Council Elections. He said the measure had been outlined during his campaign and formed part of commitments made to the public.
The President described Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa as ageing housing developments, noting that while minor repairs had been carried out, comprehensive maintenance had not been completed to the required standard.
He said the Cabinet decided in January to waive fines imposed on residents and provide financial assistance to support necessary repairs. The decision to waive fines on social housing units had been made earlier, but implementation was delayed due to a lack of required cooperation from the City Council.
President Dr Muizzu said residents would remain in the flats until new housing units are constructed and relocation arrangements are finalised, adding that they should not be left to endure prolonged difficulties during the transition.
The President reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to assisting citizens in need, stating that the Government would not allow residents to face serious hardships without support.
