The Gaafu Dhaalu Faresmaathodaa Harbour and Boat Beaching Area Development Project has been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) under a contract signed with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Government, while MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed signed on behalf of the company. The project is valued at MVR 209.43 million and is scheduled to be completed within 780 days.
The scope of works includes 465,726 cubic metres of land reclamation, construction of a 300-metre quay wall, 733 metres of revetment, 133 metres of geotube revetment and a 329-metre groin. The project will also deliver 1,462 metres of outer wall protection, 9,206 square metres of pavement works and the construction of a 6-metre-long, 36-metre-wide concrete bridge.
Faresmaathodaa is widely recognised as one of the Maldives’ active fishing communities. The island is also home to one of the airports serving Huvadhu Atoll. However, residents have long faced constraints due to limited harbour space, affecting docking, loading and unloading operations.
Authorities state that the upgraded harbour and designated boat beaching area are expected to significantly improve operational capacity, ease congestion and enhance overall efficiency for fishing and cargo activities upon completion.
