Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya has revealed that 30 farmers across three islands have been trained and equipped with hydroponic farming systems as part of efforts to modernise local agricultural practices.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the Minister said the hydroponics programme is designed to support the cultivation of leafy vegetables on small plots of land using modern techniques, with a focus on commercial production.

The programme has so far been implemented in Baa Thulhaadhoo, Faafu  Dharaboodhoo and Alifu Dhaalu Omadhoo. Ten farmers in each island have been provided with hydroponic systems along with hands-on training on installation, maintenance and production.

In addition to the island-based initiative, the Ministry is also piloting vertical farming systems. Three types of vertical hydroponic systems have been installed and tested at the Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo Agricultural Centre, while further vertical farming projects are underway in Lhaviyani Naifaru, Alifu Alifu Mathiveri, and Thaa Kinbidhoo.

The Minister further noted that the MGAP certification scheme has been introduced to strengthen national food safety standards and promote environmentally responsible production practices.

She also highlighted that during Ramadan, produce from certified farmers is being sold at the temporary farmers’ market established in the North Harbour area, supporting market access for local growers.
