Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Maryam Mariya has announced that efforts to introduce value addition for locally produced agricultural products will begin soon as part of the Government’s strategy to strengthen the agriculture sector.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the Minister said a dedicated value addition facility has been established in Shaviyani Goidhoo under a SAARC-supported project. The facility is intended to enhance the market value of agricultural produce cultivated by Maldivian farmers.
The Ministry has initiated the procurement process for machinery and equipment required to operationalise the centre. The Minister expressed confidence that products will soon begin to be produced at the Goidhoo facility once the necessary installations are completed.
In addition, the Government plans to launch a specialised initiative aimed at increasing the production of high-value morninga products. As part of this effort, the Ministry will acquire machinery within this year to support the production of value-added morninga goods and expand income opportunities for farmers.
The Minister further revealed that land plots will be allocated in 13 islands to boost banana cultivation in efforts to increase domestic agricultural output and reduce reliance on imports.
