Police report spike in traffic accidents in Greater Malé Region during Ramadan

The Maldives Police Service has reported that traffic accidents in the Greater Malé area during the first week of Ramadan have increased compared to the same period last year.
Data comparing the first week of Ramadan 1446 (1–7 March 2025) and 1447 (18–24 February 2026) indicates higher figures across several major roads. Majeedhee Magu recorded the highest number of accidents this year with 19 cases, up from 14 last year, while incidents on the Sinamalé Bridge and Highway also rose to 19 from 16. Phase 2 saw an increase to 16 cases compared to 14 previously, and the “Others” category recorded a notable rise from nine to 16 cases. Ameenee Magu also experienced a slight increase, with nine accidents compared to eight last year.
Meanwhile, Boduthakurufaanu Magu recorded a decline from 10 to eight incidents, and Phase 1 remained unchanged at 17 cases in both years. The Local Market area saw a marginal increase from two to three reported accidents.
Police urged motorists to exercise caution during the remainder of Ramadan, advising drivers to remain attentive, reduce speed and practise patience on the roads to help prevent accidents.
