Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has stated that contracts will soon be awarded for the construction of a new National Health Laboratory (NHL) aimed at strengthening the testing of food and medicines in the Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the minister said the National Health Laboratory currently operates from the Ministry of Health and conducts essential testing to ensure the safety of medicines imported into the Maldives as well as food products sold in the country.

Minister Nazim revealed that funding has already been secured for the project, with the European Investment Bank (EIB) providing USD 25 million for the construction of the new facility. The consultancy phase of the project is currently underway, with the consultancy contract awarded to a German company for USD 1.2 million in November. According to the minister, the project is expected to be opened for international tender in June, following the completion of the consultancy process.

A plot of 26,000 square feet of land has been allocated for the development, which will include two separate buildings, a nine-storey building and a three-storey building. One of the buildings will house laboratories and research facilities, while the other will accommodate the administrative and technical operations of the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA).

Minister Nazim noted that the new laboratory will enable the Maldives to conduct testing for virology risk level 1 and level 3 viruses and bacteria, significantly expanding the country’s laboratory capabilities through the use of modern technology.

He added that the facility will further strengthen research required to ensure the safety of food imports and exports while also supporting broader research activities within the health sector.

The new complex will also include modern support facilities such as a library, multipurpose hall, fitness facilities, childcare services and prayer areas, aimed at supporting staff and research activities.

The minister said the establishment of the new laboratory will significantly strengthen the MFDA’s capacity to expand its services and contribute to improving the overall health sector in the Maldives.
