Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has questioned whether opposition candidates would cooperate with the Government if elected in the upcoming Local Council and WDC elections, responding to claims that development would not be hindered if opposition candidates secure council seats.

Speaking at the inauguration of People’s National Congress (PNC) campaign office for Haa Dhaalu Atoll in Malé City, the Vice President said local councils should consist of individuals who are prepared to work with the Government to address the needs of island communities and support development efforts.

Vice President referred to statements made by opposition figures suggesting that the country’s development would continue even if their candidates were elected to councils. In response, he asked whether those candidates currently cooperate with the Government and support its policies.

According to the Vice President, councils play an important role in addressing the concerns of residents and implementing development initiatives, which he said requires collaboration between local authorities and the central Government. He also criticised what he described as inconsistencies in the opposition’s positions on political issues, noting that earlier calls regarding election arrangements had later been opposed.

The Vice President urged voters to support candidates of the People’s National Congress, stating that electing representatives who are willing to work closely with the Government would help facilitate development projects and improve services in island communities.

The Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections are scheduled to be held on 4 April, with political parties intensifying campaign activities across the country ahead of the polls.
