President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that an agreement was signed on Saturday evening to address electricity supply issues in Addu, with the new system expected to meet the atoll’s electricity needs for the next 20 years.
Speaking at the People’s National Congress (PNC) “The Greater Addu” event, President Dr Muizzu said the agreement covers the development of a 27-megawatt electricity system for the atoll, expected to be completed by July next year.
During his remarks, President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the Government’s efforts to strengthen the economy while repaying foreign debt and fulfilling pledges made to the public. He noted that development projects should be allowed to proceed without obstruction.
Referring to the Decentralization Act, the President said councils are granted powers and responsibilities under the law and noted that such authority should not be used to obstruct development projects for political reasons.
In relation to development in Addu, President Dr Muizzu stated that 48 projects linked to the atoll are currently underway at various stages of implementation.
The President also referred to an announcement made during the Presidential Address 2026, where he stated that Addu Atoll will be designated as a special incentive zone for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for a three-year period starting in January 2027. He called on investors to consider opportunities in the atoll and noted that incentives would include concessions on Government rent and taxes.
President Dr Muizzu also urged Addu residents to vote for PNC candidates in the upcoming elections on 4 April in order to support the implementation of development projects planned for the atoll.
