President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed greetings to all Maldivian women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, while addressing a ceremony organised by the People’s National Congress to launch the Greater Addu Vision on Saturday evening.

The President highlighted the Administration’s concrete contributions to women’s development, noting reforms that have empowered Women’s Development Committees (WDCs). He explained that committee chairpersons now serve as elected, full-time executives, and members receive Ramadan allowances. The Government has also doubled the budget allocation for WDCs from five per cent to ten per cent, with allowances provided from council budgets rather than committee funds.

He reaffirmed that advancing women’s development and mainstreaming empowerment remain key priorities, pointing to loan schemes and economic programmes announced in this year’s Presidential Address.

Turning to Addu City, President Dr Muizzu outlined the Administration’s vision for its development, including 48 ongoing initiatives and 18 new projects. He announced an agreement to establish a facility capable of adding 26 megawatts of electricity to the city’s grid, expected to be completed by July next year, ensuring reliable energy for the next 20 years.

The President stressed that the Government is prepared to meet upcoming debt obligations, including the Sukuk payment due next month, while continuing to strengthen the national economy. He also pledged to deliver on road construction across Addu City, with equipment, machinery, and labour already being procured.
