Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has introduced intraoperative neuromonitoring, a technology used during neurosurgical procedures.
Senior Consultant Sub-Specialist in Neurosurgery at IGMH, Dr Ali Niyaf, said intraoperative neuromonitoring is an essential tool for ensuring patient safety during neurosurgical procedures. He explained that the system displays how nerves are functioning throughout the surgery.
Dr Niyaf noted that the machine provides percentage-based readings if any change occurs while operating close to nerves, allowing surgeons to identify potential risks immediately.
He added that the technology is also valuable during common procedures such as spinal disc surgeries and operations involving spinal injuries. In such procedures, surgeons often insert screws into the spine, and the system can detect whether the screw placement may affect nearby nerves.
IGMH stated that the introduction of intraoperative neuromonitoring marks an important step in reducing the risk of nerve damage during surgery and improving patient safety. The hospital also noted that the development represents significant progress in enhancing the standard of care provided for neurological conditions in the Maldives.
