Former Kaafu Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has stated that holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day would bring several benefits, including reducing disruptions to governance and limiting State expenditure.
Jabir made the remarks while speaking during a MMTV live broadcast from the PNC North Henveiru constituency door-to-door campaign activities.
According to Jabir, experiences from previous election cycles show that holding parliamentary elections shortly after the presidential election can create challenges for a newly elected administration. He noted that when parliamentary elections are held within six months of the presidential election, the Government often faces difficulties in implementing its policies and fulfilling pledges made to the public.
Jabir said holding the two elections on the same day could help avoid such delays and allow an administration to begin its work without interruption.
He also noted that conducting both elections simultaneously could reduce the financial burden on the State by limiting repeated election-related expenses. Jabir added that several countries conduct major elections on the same day for similar reasons.
During the discussion, Jabir also highlighted what he described as the administration’s ongoing development efforts across the country, stating that a number of projects are currently underway in different islands.
He further expressed confidence that the People’s National Congress (PNC) would secure a strong result in the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections.
