Ashiyath Alaika Adhnan, the People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate for President of the Malé City Women’s Development Committee (WDC),has emphasised the importance of including women’s opinions and concerns in decisions related to the development of Maldivian society.

Alaika made the remarks in a statement issued on the occasion of International Women’s Day. In the statement, she noted that this year’s theme designated by the United Nations is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”. She said the theme highlights the importance of taking practical action to ensure justice and equality for women, rather than limiting efforts to written commitments on women’s rights.

Alaika further noted that International Women’s Day is an occasion to reaffirm the dignity of women and to set new goals aimed at ensuring equal opportunities. She said women play a central role in families and communities, adding that empowering women would contribute to the progress and future of society as a whole.

She also stressed that women’s perspectives should be included in decisions relating to social progress and development, while creating opportunities for women to earn an income and achieve financial independence.

Alaika added that institutions must work together to provide protection and support to single mothers and families in need, while ensuring women have access to essential services such as healthcare, safety and social support.

Referring to recent legislative amendments, Alaika noted that the authority of Women’s Development Committees has been strengthened. She added that increasing block grants to WDCs to 10 per cent of council grants further support efforts aimed at empowering women and strengthening community development initiatives.
